Deadpool 2’s PG-13 cut borrows inspiration from The Princess Bride

In Once Upon a Deadpool, Deadpool trades all the swearing and violence for … well, less swearing and violence.

Despite the new name and holiday-themed poster, Once Upon a Deadpool isn’t a totally new tale, but a recut version of Deadpool 2, with enough swearing and violence stripped away to make the PG-13 rating. There is some new footage, used as a framing device, envisioned by Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and filmed with just a tiny crew within a day’s time. It’s set up to be a bedtime story, reminiscent of The Princess Bride. In fact, the child star of The Princess Bride, Fred Savage, will appear in these new scenes as Deadpool reads him a bedtime story.

Reynolds told Deadline on Monday that Fox has been asking for a PG-13 version of Deadpool since 2016, and he would only agree provided two conditions were met.

“First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity,” said Reynolds. “Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage.”

Once Upon a Deadpool will be theaters for 12 days, starting Dec. 12 and running through Dec. 24, aiming to get ticket sales from teenagers on winter break who couldn’t see the bloody Deadpool 2 in theaters on their own. For every ticket bought, $1 will go to the Fuck Cancer campaign — which has been renamed “Fudge Cancer” for this effort, since the whole point of Once Upon a Deadpool is rebranding the R-rated spectacle to be squeaky clean for wholesome teens.
